INTRODUCTION

The Nocturnes portfolio follows twenty photographs from the last of the light into full dark. Notturno in Do maggiore takes eight of them, all made in Italy, and sets them to a road and a scale. The road runs north from Rome through Siena and Florence, out to the Ligurian coast, and on to Venice. Each stop is a note of the major scale, from Do to Do: a departure, a climb, and a return an octave higher. The map shows where each photograph was made. The program pairs each note with a piece of Italian music built on it, a code away on your phone. Listen while you look, or let the room stay quiet. The photographs keep the same time either way.
