Nocturnes Portfolio
INTRODUCTION
A nocturne is a piece of music for the night: unhurried, spare, a little melancholy. These sixteen photographs are meant to be taken up the same way, one after another, in the order they are laid. They move from the last of the light into full dark, across water, stone and sky. Little is explained. The eye adjusts, and what remains is shape, shadow and a small amount of light. Some were made at night. Others began in daylight, or were built from more than one photograph, and were carried into darkness afterward, as filmmakers once shot day for night. Each is meant less as a record of a place than as a record of a mood.
