In the Middle Ages, the bestiary was one of the most treasured books a library could hold. Its pages paired animals with allegory, so that each creature became a mirror for something human: patience, vigilance, folly. To look at an animal was to read a lesson.
Bestiary carries that way of seeing into black and white fine art animal photography. Each portrait isolates a single creature against a deep black ground, with no landscape, enclosure, or season to anchor it. Without that context, the animal stops being a specimen or a subject of wildlife photography and becomes a presence: a face, a gesture, a stillness that invites the viewer to supply the meaning.
