Bestiary Portfolio
INTRODUCTION
A medieval bestiary was less interested in what an animal was than in what it meant. These sixteen photographs begin from the same curiosity. Each creature is lifted out of its surroundings and set against darkness, with nothing to say where it lives or how it was found. What remains is a posture, a texture, a gaze: the look of someone waiting to be admitted, or keeping a long vigil. The titles are borrowed from monastic life, its hours of prayer and its offices. They offer no description. They ask only for slow looking, the kind once given to the pages of a book of beasts.
