Early and late, before the crowds arrive and after they've gone, Venice returns to the water it was built on. Out on the lagoon, the city thins to a faint line between gray water and gray sky. Moorings stand in the shallows, marking channels toward nowhere in particular. In the city itself, a canal lies still, a bridge waits empty, and at night San Giorgio Maggiore floats in its own reflection across the basin. These are not the Venice of postcards, but of pauses: the city holding its breath.
