In the late 1960s, Daido Moriyama and the founders of the Provoke movement broke with conventional, polished, and well-mannered photography and adopted a style that celebrated the imperfect, the impermanent, and the incomplete. They called this approach Are-Bure-Boke (grainy, blurry, out of focus) and captured images that represented the vagaries and uncertainty of memory rather than the exactness of historical record. This collection of phtographs--taken on several trips over the span of more than ten years--follows that spirit through the streets of Japan: the narrow lanes of Gion, the neon of Dōtonbori, and the rain-slicked streets and allyes of Tokyo.
